War-Time Finance

AUSTRALIA FOOTS THE BILL. A'Study in War Finance. By S. J. Butlin, T. K. Critchley, R. B. McMillan and A. H. Tange. Angus & Robertson, Sydney, in conjunction with the New South Wales branch of the Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand. Price 4/6. This is the first of what is to be a series of books on the economic problems of war written by members of the New South Wales branch of the Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand. It is a comprehensive and interesting review of Australian war finance for the period 1339-41, including chanters on Budgetary and monetary pol'icy, defence expenditures and the various measures of Government control. In the final chapter, the most useful of all, the authors discuss the future of war finance in 1941-42 and subsequent years, as the strain becomes more and more heavy. Sections of the book deal with problems peculiar to Australia, such as the co-ordination of Federal and State finance, buf by far the greater part of it is of general interest and many of the authors’ observations apply with special force in New Zealand.,
