WORLD’S RECORD IN SADDLE

Gold Bar’s Time For Mile

WHITELEIGH HANDICAP.—Auckland horses again made a good showing in the opening event when Man Jong scored its second win of the meeting with Josedale Dictator in second place. The pair fairly outclassed the Canterbury horses, few of which showed true form. Timwortny was an exception and displayed some of his well-known speed in disputing the lead until the straight was reached. Josedale Dictator will still be favourite it he makes another appearance at the meeting.

LELIEVRE HANDICAP. — Great Blaze paced soundly in the Lelievre Handicap and while he had to cover some extra ground he fairly outclassed the field over the last two furlongs. Acuity made most of the running from Palomar, Great Blaze, Mongolian, Toceetie and Lady Carol, while Happy Man stayed on the mark. U Scott raced to the leaders with a great burst of speed and led with Acuity into the straight. Great Blaze finished at a great rate and fairly outpaced Toceetie. OLLIVIER HANDICAP.— The 01livier Handicap enabled Gold Bar to show his brilliance. In the later stages he fairly outclassed horses that had beaten him in the Cup. It was a brilliant performance and the time, 3.27, was a record. It was a mile rate of 2.71. The race was full of interest from start to finish and Gold Bar at once hit the front and had a lead of two lengths after five furlongs had been covered. Josedale Grattan made an effort three furlongs from home, but Gold Bar led into the straight and was not seriously troubled with the effort of Springfield Globe.

NEW ZEALAND DERBY.— Pacing Power established his right to be regarded as the best three-year-old in New Zealand when he decisively won the Derby from Integrity, a maiden pacer, and Great News. The last named took the lead early and showed the way to Pacing Power, Integrity, Tu Rangi and Sandiways, who had lost ground early. It was not until half a mile from home that Pacing Power challenged the leader and when he raced to the front three furlongs from home Great News failed rather badly and it was left to Integrity to make the race interesting. Pacing Power won with something in reserve.

SOCKBURN HANDICAP.— GreatIy improved by his racing at Oamaru and again on the first day of the Metropolitan meeting, Lament showed rare speed and determination when he won the Sockburn Handicap. He gave a fine display of trotting and while Dark Hazard finished’ at a great rate he just failed to catch the leader. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. — Pleasant Guy set out to make the pace in the Metropolitan Handicap and he almost succeeded, but he could never get far away from Worthy Need, Kilrea, Waipahi and Haughty. The last named joined issue three furlongs from home and followed Pleasant Guy into the straight. In the run home Haughty was too brilliant for Pleasant Guy and won comfortably. CLARKSON HANDICAP.— GoId Bar established a world’s race record in saddle when he won the Clarkson Handicap in 2.3 3-5 and equalled the fastest time for the distance, recorded by Acron in the Free for All from a moving start in 1934. At the start Mankind went ahea.'. of Adversity, Colonel Grattan and Gold Bar, but in half a mile Gold Bar had drawn up with the leader and at the half-mile post he put on a two lengths’ break. Gold Bar treated the rest of the field rather cheaply and won with ease from Mankind.
