MATAURA

SCHOOL COMMITTEE The resignation of Mr D. W. Kaye from the teaching staff of the school was accepted with regret at a meeting of the Mataura School Committee. Appreciation of Mr Kaye’s services was expressed by members and a decision was made to enter a minute recording the committee’s thanks. Mr Kaye will leave Mataura next month to take up a position at the Waipiata School. In his monthly report the headmaster stated that the roll number was 361, there being 195 boys and 166 girls. The average attendance for the last month was 93.5 per cent. In view of the fact that there was a slight epidemic of mumps, the average attendance was satisfactory. A start had been made with the St. John Ambulance classes and the pupils were taking a keen interest in the work. The chairman stated that an offer had been made by the Mataura Cricket Club to coach the school pupils on the club’s wicket. The headmaster expressed appreciation of the offer, stating that he would like to see cricket established at the school. PERSONAL Mr I. Herbison, who has been attached to the clerical staff of the New Zealand Paper Mills Ltd., at Mataura, has been transferred to the head office of the firm at Dunedin. During his stay at Mataura Mr Herbison has taken a keen and active interest in the affairs of the Mataura Boxing Club and tributes to his service were paid at a social held in his honour. A presentation of a hold-all was made by Mr L. J. Brazier on behalf of the club.
