CAPTAIN L. DOUGLAS NOW BELIEVED KILLED

After a long period of suspense and anxiety, news was received recently that Captain Lennox Douglas, of Oamaru, is missing, believed killed in action. From the accounts of various survivors, he was on a small transport in the Aegean Sea, and at the actual moment of attending to some wounded men an enemy bomber which was attacking the ship dropped a bomb amidships close to where he was working with Lieutenant Newlands, of Dunedin. The whole middle part of the ship was destroyed. Captain Douglas was born and educated in Oamaru. He went through the medical course in Dunedin, afterwards proceeding to England for postgraduate experience. Returning to Oamaru about eight years ago, he began practice, which he continued until he enlisted for active service. Captain Douglas was a member of the honorary staff of the Oamaru Public Hospital. He took a leading part in many local activities, and many will recall his dramatic talent, and especially his last appearance in Oamaru in “French Without Tears,” produced by the Optimists.
