OBITUARY

MR F G. CUMMING After a short illness, Mr Francis George Cumming, a former secretary and chaplain of the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society, which he served for 27 years, died at his home in Dunedin, at the age of 79 years. Mr Cumming was born in Port Said, and educated in Aberdeen. As a young man he came to New Zealand, and became agent of the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society in 1907, and chaplain for mental hospitals, an appointment which was to last until his resignation in September 1933. He was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in 1911, and was appointed a justice of the peace in 1919. He served as the city’s senior probation officer from 1920 until 1928. One of the outstanding organizations with which Mr Cumming was associated was the James Powell Rest Home at Warrington. He was instrumental in the foundation of that institution. He was also responsible for the introduction of moving pictures into the mental hospital in Otago. He was a member of the Otago Hospital Board for a period of about six years, and he was associated with the Otago Patriotic Association from its inception. He served on the Maori Hill Borough Council before that district’s amalgamation with the city, and also on +he Dunedin School Committees’ Association. He was an elder for many years at Knox Church, and later at the Maori Hill Presbyterian Church. He took an interest in the work of friendly societies, and was the Dominion Grand Master of the Orange Lodge in 1923-24. Mr Cumming is survived by his wife, four daughters and five sons, three of whom are at present on active service. MR M. N. HEINEMANN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 26. Mr M. M.
