QUOTA SYSTEM OF SAVINGS

ENTHUSIASM AROUSED (Special) WELLINGTON, October 24. The weekly quota system recently adopted in the National Savings movement has been enthusiastically taken up by local savings committees. Under the quota arrangement a definite sum to be saved weekly has been fixed for each town and city in the Dominion, and reports to hand show that the local committees, upon which devolves so much of the work in creating and maintaining interest in the National Savings movement, are fully alive to their responsibilities and generally are entering with enthusiasm upon this new phase of increased activity. “Some committees,, of course, are further ahead than others in their campaign development, but evidence is not lacking to show that the movement generally is rapidly gaining momentum and that there is every prospect ot raising by National Savings at least £5,000,000 this year for war purposes,” said Mr T. N. Smallwood, chairman ol the National Savings campaign. “It cannot be too often emphasized that every penny derived from National Savings accounts and the sale of National Savings bonds is applied to war purposes and to war purposes alone. SAVINGS BAROMETER “As part of the quota scheme each post office flagpole is being equipped with a ‘money ball,’ which will be raised progressively each day according to the proportionate amount of the weekly quota received. When the ball reaches the top of the pole a special flag is broken out and remains flying at the masthead for the rest of the week. Each Monday the flag disappears from the pole and the ball starts to rise again. Thus people see, barometer fashion, the progress of their war saving. The money balls and pennants are being provided free of cost to the National Savings movement through the generosity of local patriots. “Although complete reports from all districts are not yet to hand, it is clear that the quotas fixed are by no means impossible of attainment. For the week ended October 18 the following offices are known to have exceeded their quotas: Blenheim district, Picton and Seddon; Christchurch district, Ashburton, Cheviot, Hawarden, Hinds, Kaikoura, Mayfield, Rakaia and Sefton; Hamilton district, Mangapehi, Morrinsville, Taumarunui, Teanga and Temata; Invercargill district, Half Moon Bay and Lumsden; Nelson district, Motueka; New Plymouth district, New Plymouth, Eltham, Hawera, Inglewood, Opunake and Urenui; Palmerston North district, Halcombe, Pahiatua and Weber; Timaru district, Fairlie; Wanganui district, Hunterville, Raetihi, Taihape and Waverley; Westport district, Karamea. WELLINGTON REACHES QUOTA (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 24. Almost exactly at noon today Wellington reached its quota of £BOOO for the week in the National Savings campaign and the flag was duly hoisted to indicate the achievement of the task, which the committee was confident would be accomplished. Further sums are still coming in and Wellington’s quota by tomorrow will be exceeded.
