HOLIDAY WEATHER PROSPECTS

CHANGEABLE CONDITIONS According to a report received by the Automobile Association (Southland) yesterday there were three feet of snow at the Homer Tunnel and doubt was expressed whether cars would be able to get much beyond Cascade Creek during the week-end. However, last night it was learned from Te Anau that the weather had improved considerably and as the snow plough was out yesterday there was every prospect that the road would be open today. The weather at Te Anau yesterday was fine, though the wind was somewhat cold. Queenstown and Alexandra also reported fine weather with a rising glass at Queenstown The weather in the city yesterday was still broken, though it was not nearly so stormy as on Thursday, and periods of sunshine in the afternoon raised hopes that better conditions would prevail for the holiday. There were further showers of rain after nightfall, but the special weather forecast for Southland was not altogether unfavourable. It predicted cool and changeable weather, improving later. Those who go on holiday would probably be well advised to be prepared for rain, nevertheless.
