GORE NEWS

SIGNALLING TESTS LONG-DISTANCE EFFORTS BY HOME GUARD Members of the signal unit of the Home Guard at Gore carried out the first long-distance signalling tests on Wednesday evening, and it is understood that they proved highly satisfactory. The new group signals officer for area 12a (Mr C. W. Adamson) took up a position before dark on a hill at Moa Flat overlooking the Mataura Valley and members of the Gore unit under the commander (Mr T. F. Rusbridge) j were stationed on the Gore Golf Club’s links at Croydon. Messages flashed across by Mr Adamson over a distance of approximately 30 miles were picked up quite readily at the golf links and a two-way communication was kept up i without interruption for some considerable time. I The strength of the unit is 16 and the i majority of the men are now capable of sending and receiving messages. The unit has been in operation since the formation of the Home Guard in the district and its members are all very interested and keen in the work. PERSONAL The Mayor of Gore (Mr W. D. Shelton) waited on Leading-Aircraftman Keith Goodwin, who is spending his leave in the district, and presented him with a money belt and a sum of money on behalf of' the residents of Riversdale. The presentation was made at the request of the chairman of the Riversdale Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee (Mr R. H. Matthews). Mr Shelton extended to Leading-Aircraft-man Goodwin the best wishes of the •people of Riversdale and also the good wishes of the people of Gore.
