HOME GUARD

INVERCARGILL BATTALION NEXT PARADES: Wednesday, Octobei’ 29, 7 p.m. at Drill Hall.—Full parade, . transport without vehicles. Wednesday, November 5, 7 p.m. at Drill Hall.—Full parade. It will be announced next week whether vehicles will be required for this parade. Guardsmen are to note that the parades fall in at 7 p.m. and not 7.30 p.m. The earlier time enables more use to be made of daylight. BURNHAM COURSE Messrs J. C. Prain and A. G. Harrington will attend the course on Tactics from October 31 to November 9. APPLICATIONS FOR DISCHARGE A Home Guardsman remains a member of the Home Guard until discharged. Discharges can only be granted by the group director except in cases of a transfer to the Armed Forces which is an automatic discharge. There are over 400 Guardsmen in the Invercargill roll who are not attending parades, and many of these do not appear to realize that they remain liable as Home Guardsmen. Applications for discharge should not be made direct to group director but to unit commanders and should be made in writing. If any Guardsman as a result of reorganization is uncertain to which unit he belongs he should address his application to the adjutant (Mr G. M. Broughton, Box 91, Invercargill). COUNTRY UNITS Commendable keenness is shown by most of tlxe units of the Home Guard in the country districts have been visited by the group adjutant and instructional staff. High percentages of attendances are x’ecorded. Among the centres deserving praise are Dipton, Centre Bush, Hokonui, Woodlands, Gorge Road and Clifden. Further centres will be visited this week-end and next week.
