HUMOROUS POEM

—PRIZE— Her hair is fair as blackbird’s wing, Her eyes are blue as night, _ Her smile is full of sobbing sighs, Her hands are all pure white. Her figure is as rotund. As the slender forest vines, Her mat is of the dullest hues, Of green and scarlet lines. She swims along the asphalt path, This Maori maid so fair, And sings a lovely lilting song, That crashes in my ear. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Eunice West A.C. (12), Tuturau R.D., Mataura. —HIGHLY COMMENDED— There Was once a man from the town of Mogg, Who went a walking one fine day, But, alas! he fell into a bog, Which caused his many friends dismay. There he sat with a mud-caked face, While his foes all laughed with glee, For on his head there stood a frog, And an eel curled round his knee. His friends all raced to fetch some ropes, And joined them to a log, No matter how they pulled and tugged, They couldn't remove that frog. Indeed the poor man was in a plight, For his hair came up with the frog, As the people had tugged too hard, alas! That queer-looking man from Mogg. —2 marks to Cousin Elva McQuarrie (14), 18 Joseph street, Gore. —HIGHLY COMMENDED— One day I was out walking, I saw a bumble-bee, Resting on an apricot, Hanging from a tree. I tried my best to pick it, But his feet were very hot, I had to go and leave him, Sitting on that apricot.

, When I went home for dinner, • What do you think was there? It was my friend the bumble-bee, • Sitting on my chair. • At first I did not see him, When on my chair I sat, I jumped, I yelled, I cried with rage, i Then caught him in my hat. —2 marks to Cousin John McNoe A.C. (11), Heddon Bush R.D., Winton. —HIGHLY COMMENDED— A wandering old albatross wanted To cross miles of southern seas, And because he felt lazy And his mileage was hazy He determined to travel with ease. 1 So he spread his huge wings, j And flew round in rings, | Then alighted upon a snip’s deck, ’ And the sailors came racing And shouting and chasing ; And seized Albatross by the neck. ’ He Was terribly sick ’ And the sailors came quick With mops, pails and water galore, And Albatross said As he shook his poor head “I won’t travel by ship any more. —2 marks to Cousin Eveline Coster A.C. (14), Gummies Bush R.D. —HIGHLY COMMENDED— The guns boomed out with such a roar, At the battle of Waterloo, The sea gave an angry snore, At the battle of Waterloo. Someone cried “We’ll all be drowned,” At the battle of Waterloo, The waves shouted “Bet your boots,” At the battle of Waterloo. When they all got back home, They were clinging to bits of planks, Those on shore cried “What’s to do,” As they landed on the banks. We’ve been to the battle of Waterloo, And the sea was very warm. It took us sailing to the rocks, And brought us here by dawn. —2 marks to Cousin Jack Rawle, V.A.C. (16), Great North Road, Winton.
