N.Z. AIR SQUADRON IN MALAYA

(80.W.) RUGBY. October 22. The first Royal Air Force squadron in Malaya manned entirely by New Zealand personnel is now operating near Singapore, states the Air Ministry News Service. The squadron, whose commander won the Distinguished Flying Cross in the Battle of Britain, is equipped with American-built Brewster Buffalo fighters. Its pilots quickly adapted themselves from advanced trainers to the 330 miles an hour machines which constantly soar across the skies of Singapore. New Zealand pilots and ground crews have been entering Malaya in a steady flow for many months. They were attached to other squadrons until sufficient experience had been gained and enough members accumulated to form a separate New Zealand squadron. There are already a number of Australian squadrons in Majaya. One station is almost exclusively manned by Australians and an Australian group captain is in command.
