STEWART ISLAND

FISHING OPERATIONS HAMPERED The weather r.i Stewart Island during the last month has been fairly fine. During last week the weather became very warm and the prospects for Labour Day week-end are very good. A number of householders is beginning to find their water supplies running very’short. The attractions for Labour Day week-end include the opening of the Stewart Island bowling green on Saturday afternoon. In the evening a

grand victory concert is to he staged by the Stewart Island Women’s Institute in aid of war comforts. Although the weather ashore has been good conditions at sea have not been so pleasant and the fishing operations are practically at a standstill. Conditions at Pegasus are also unfavourable and most of the boats have returned to Half Moon Bay. Boats which have at times made attempts to bring in supplies of fish state that blue cod seem to have completely disappeared from the grounds.
