BURNSIDE STOCK SALE BEEF VALUES DECLINE (P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 22. There was an excellent showing in the beef section at the Burnside sale, when a large offering, comprising 327 head, was forward. On account of the heavier yarding there was a decline in values. Prime heavy bullocks were from 15/to 20/- easier, medium quality bullocks were 25/- to 30/- cheaper, heifers generally were 10/- a head easier, while cows showed a decline of from 15/- to 20/- a head. Values were: Extra prime heavy bullocks to £22/12/6, prime heavy £l7/12/6 to £l9/12/6, medium £l3/12/6 to £l5/12/6, light down to £ll/17/6, extra prime cows and heifers sold to £l4/12/6, prime from £ll/12/6 to £l2/17/6, medium £B/2/6 to £lO/12/6, light down to £4/17/6. The entry of store cattle numbered 170. Buyers competed freely for any well-bred steers, which sold well, but lines lacking condition did not meet the same inquiry and were slightly easier. A pen of three and four-year-old wellbred steers sold at £ll/15/-. Vealers were in short supply and met a keen demand.

The quality of the sheep forward was not up to recent standards. The offering numbered 1879, about half of the penning being shorn. The market opened with keen competition for all classes, prices being firm on the preceding sale’s rates. Over the final races most of the buyers had filled their requirements and sales at this stage were difficult to effect. Values declined at the conclusion by l/~ to 1/6 a head. Extra prime heavy woolly wethers sold to 42/-, prime heavy from 33/- to 35/-, medium from 29/- to 31/-, light down to 27/-, extra prime shorn wethers to 31/6, prime from 27/- to 29/6, medium from 24/6 to 26/9, light down to 21/-, extra prime heavy young woolly ewes to 34/-, prime heavy to 31/-, prime from 27/- to 29/6, medium from 23/- to 26/9, light down to 21/-, extra prime shorn ewes to 23/9, medium from 19/- to 21/-, light down to 17/-. There was a large offering of fat lambs, 159 being penned. Several consignments were of choice quality, but there were some light and unfinished lambs included. Values were slightly easier than at the preceding sale. The heaviest grades sold to 37/-. The entry of fat pigs numbered 204, porkers predominating. The sale opened with keen competition, but over the concluding races had an easing tendency. The best baconers sold at £5/5/and porkers sold from £2/10/- to £3/15/- according to size and quality. In the store pig section 135 were penned and late rates were fully maintained, large stores selling to 38/-. . In the dairy section 37 cows of mixed appearance were submitted to auction. Good young cows close to profit met the best inquiry, selling to £lO/5/-. VALUES AT ADDINGTON EASIER (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. Heavy entries today brought about an easing in most classes of fat stock at the Addington sale. Fat sheep, which showed an increase of about 1000 head in entries, eased sharply, particularly old ewes. The average decline was about 4/- and wethers were 2/6 cheaper. All but a few southern sheep were shorn. Good shorn wethers made from 22/- to 25/-, tops to 31/-, medium 18/- to'2l/-, light from 16/- to 17/6, gQfid evyes gjacjejQ

medium 14/6 to 17/6, light from 10/upwards. The store sheep entry was much larger than usual. Ewe hoggets sold to 35/3 for extra good sheep—a small pen of three-quarterbreds in the wool. Others made from 25/- to 29/-, shorn from 18/- to 21/3. They were up to a shilling weaker than last week. Shorn wether hoggets and shorn wethers sold to 21/-. The best of the ewes and lambs sold from 15/6 to 17/-, all counted. Spring lambs attracted an entry of 650 head, which was more than the market wanted. Values eased, the best making lOd per lb and others 9d. Top prices were from 28/- to 31/-. Although there were fewer fat cattle forward than last week values dropped sharply, heavy bullocks by fully 25/- a head, secondary steers and cows by 20/-, and light prime steers and heifers by 15/- to 20/-. Good beef made from 39/- to 42/6 per 1001 b, a few tops to 44/-; medium and heavyweight 35/to 38/-, and inferior down to 27/-. Good steers sold from £l6 to £lB, a few tops to over £2O and mediumweight prime steers from £l4 to £l5 10/-. Good heifers made from £l2 to £l4, and the best cows from £ll to £l4. The best quality porkers maintained last week’s rates over the weights and unfinished were 5/- cheaper. Prices ranged from £2/4/6 to £3/8/6, the average per lb being 7d to 9d. Baconers realized from £3/7/6 to £4/6/6, the average per lb being 6d to Bd. DONAGHY’S DIVIDEND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 22.
