AIRMAN HONOURED Leading Aircraftman J. Marshall, who has been home on leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs J. M. Marshall, was the recipient of gifts from the Wyndham Soldiers’ Social Committee and the Comforts Committee. In making the presentations, Mr L. Harper referred to the high esteem in which the guest was held throughout the town and district, in which he had been born and educated, and wished him the best of luck. Supporting remarks were made by Messrs A. A. Wilson and D. N. A. Macpherson, Mesdames W. Richardson and R. G. Carson. BOWLS The opening of the Edendale bowling green was attended by visitors from Hokonui, Gore, Mataura, Wyndham and Invercargill R.S.A. Clubs. The president, Mr J. Blair, in welcoming the visitors, stated that the club had attained its majority, as it was now 21 years since the green was established. Mr D. Tait, president of the Eastern District Sub-Centre, congratulated the club on attaining its majority. Mrs Blair rolled the first bowl, after which a match, president v. vice-president, was played. GIRL GUIDES The annual meeting of the Wyndham branch of Girl Guides was held in the Murihiku Hall. There was a good attendance, Mrs H. Hunter presiding. The annual balance-sheet and report were read and adopted. The annual report stated that there was a steadily increasing roll. The company, under Mrs E. S. Macfarlane, had an average attendance of 12, and five more on- the roll. With a few under age, the Brownies numbered 25. A recent appeal for good cheer for guides in England met with a generous response. A case of goods was packed to be sent overseas from New Zealand Headquarters at Hastings. Emphasis is being placed on getting a good knowledge of the rifle as well as map reading and the use of sand-table models to teach the method of tackling defence problems. The attendances over the last few nights have improved.
