Mrs S. McDonald, Gala street, leaves by this morning’s express for a visit to Auckland. Miss Eileen’Lynch, Nith street, has returned from a holiday in Dunedin and Timaru. Mrs G. F. Tobin, Blenheim, was the week-end guest of Mrs W. E. Hunt, Titipua Station, Dacre. Miss M. Kerr, Winton, left by yesterday afternoon’s express to spend a holiday in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs W. Dyer, Winton, have returned home from a holiday spent with Mr and Mrs A. Dyer, Merrivale, Otautau.

Mrs R. Riley, Dunedin, who has been spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs F. Soper, Lorneville, returned home yesterday.

Mrs H. G. Lynch gave a birthday party for her small daughter Ursula on Saturday at the home of Mrs W. A. Oliver, Holywood Terrace. Mrs J. Smillie, “Murihiku,” Forth street, who has been spending a holiday in Timaru, Christchurch and Rangiora, returned to Invercargill at the weekend. v

Miss Norah Sumby, who has been staying with her aunt, Mrs J. Wardle, Nightcaps, has left for a visit to Dunedin and the West Coast before returning to her home in Weston, New South Wales.

To raise funds for necessary equipment the signalling group of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary held a successful dance in the United Friendly Societies’ Hall on Saturday evening. Novelty dances were held, and there were about 150 guests present.

Tire recent V.A.D. examination at Invercargill resulted in the following gaining passes: I. Ackers, J. Bell, D. Fischer, M. Knight, M. McLeod, D. McArthur, R. Murray, G. Murray, D. Robbie, H. Stewart, M. Stirling, I. Stoddart, W. Sinclair, D. Torrance, H. Yates.

Miss K. McKay, Hedgehope, who is shortly to be married, was the guest of honour at a kitchen evening given by local residents. There was a large number present and an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr J. Sanderson presented the gifts, and presentations were also made from the tennis club, basketball club and the Hedgehope Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union.

Recently the Hedgehope branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its eleventh birthday. An enjoyable evening was spent in dancing, a playette, songs and an exhibition of step dancing. Mrs J. Sanderson, president, welcomed all present, especially the representatives of other branches, and thanked the performers. Messrs W. Mcßae and J. Sanderson were masters of ceremonies. The first nursing sister of the Maori race chosen to join the Nursing Division is Sister Jane Nepia, of Nuhaka, near Wairoa. She is a member of an old Nuhaka family. Representatives from all parts of the district met to entertain her the other evening and wish her good,luck. The Nuhaka Returned Soldiers’ Association made a presentation, and her many personal friends also made her a gift. On behalf of old pupils of Hukarere College, Napier, of which Sister Nepia has been matron, Mrs Hohepa made a typically poetic speech of farewell, and a presentation, and Mrs Ora Te Ngaio made a presentation on behalf of the Nuhaka Maori Relief Society.
