HEAVY FIGHTING AT LENINGRAD

WOMEN JOIN IN BATTLE RUSSIANS NOT DETERRED BY LOSS OF KIEV (United Press Association—Te 1 “graph Copyright) (Rec. 1.15 a.m). LONDON, September 22. Although they have lost Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, the Russians are fighting along the whole of the Eastern Front with undiminished fury. They are fighting with great determination and courage at Leningrad and Odessa, refusing to let the Germans pass. Kiev, once one of the proudest cities of Europe, is now a pitiful heap of ruins, a grisly testimony to the efficiency of the Russians’ “scorched earth” policy. In the battle-scarred area around Leningrad women, Home Guardsmen and Marines of the Baltic Fleet are fighting alongside Marshal Klementi Voroshilov’s soldiers, helping to stop the Germans from making the slightest progress. Behind the Russian lines the armament factories of Leningrad are working at full pressure. Behind the German lines Russian guerrilla forces, which include women, are active. One band of women attacked two German tanks and destroyed them with hand-gren-ades. At Odessa the Russian position has improved in certain sectors and after six weeks of heavy fighting the garrison is still inflicting losses on the Germans. The Germans admit that the troops thrusting towards Kharkov are meeting opposition at Poltava.
