GIRLS REPLACE BOYS

TELEGRAPH MESSENGERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 22. In a trim Air Force blue uniform with a peaked cap and satchel to match, a telegraph message girl was seen for the first time on the streets of Auckland today. Others are being fitted out and before long these girls will be familiar figures in the city. They have joined the department because of the shortage of youths arising from war conditions and have impressed the authorities by their efficiency. Enrolled as permanent officials, they are in a position to qualify for promotion and for superannuation. They will receive two years’ training as message girls and will then be transferred to other branches of the service according to their abilities.
