ANZACS STILL IN CRETE

Fearless Guerrilla Fighting NEW YORK, September 4. The heroes of Homer’s Iliad would have understood the heroism of the Anzacs who missed the boats and are still fighting with Greek guerrillas in Crete, says The New York HeraldTribune. The Cretans and Anzacs do not even need a, common speech to understand each other. The heroism and endurance of the Cretans is a worthy counterpart to the fearlessness and determination of the New Zealanders and Australians who are fighting for Crete as though they, too, were sons of Hellas. Mr J. Paul Thorn, of the American Red Cross, who has arrived in London from Athens, declared that the defence of Crete was more of a victory than a defeat as it was responsible for saving Iraq. Mr Thom, from talks with German base officers before and after the battle, gathered that Crete was a bitter pill for the Germans. Those in Athens expected the operations to last two days. “Crete became a very sore subject with the Germans and long after it was over it was not a topic you wanted to bring up in conversation,” said Mr Thom.
