AIRMAN HONOURED A very large gathering assembled at the Radio Hall when Sergeant-Pilot John G. Gow was the guest of honour. The Mayor (Mr Neil Metzger), in conveying best wishes to their guest on behalf of the people of Winton, referred to the growth and improvement of aeroplanes generally and remarked that he had himself seen one of the earliest planes that had been flown across the English Channel. The speaker said that the record held by New Zealanders in the Air Force was one to be proud of, and he was sure that Sergeant-Pilot Gow would do his best to uphold that record. In making a presentation of a sum of money, Mr Metzger wished him bon voyage and a safe return. Father P. J. O’Neill, on behalf of the Winton Returned Soldiers’ SubAssociation, complimented their guest on his chevrons and wings. He hoped that Sergeant-Pilot Gow would never have to fire a hostile shot, but that the war would be over before he reached his destination.

In speaking on behalf of the Winton Patriotic Association, Mr W. J. Bennett said they owed a deep debt to the men who withstood the blitz last September and who had carried on the attack to a hundred points in enemy territory. The speaker also referred to the presence of Private George Ward, who had returned from Fiji. Mr O. A. B. Smith, in asking Ser-geant-Pilot Gow to accept a gift from the members of the Winton Golf Club, expressed the club’s best wishes for a safe return.
