HOME GUARD There was another good attendance of more than 100 at the weekly parade of the Home Guard. After the roll call the guard marched to the sand hills west of the town where night tactical exercises were held. Another rifle practice will be held at the range at 1.30 p.m. next Saturday. V FOR VICTORY SIGN The V for victory sign followed by the three dots and a dash has made its appearance in Bluff and may be seen on several buildings, hoarding; and lorries. WOMEN’S PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE In the unavoidable absence of .he Mayoress (Mrs N. W. McGorlick), Mrs J. Cameron presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the Bluff Women’s Patriotic Committee, the hostesses being Mesdames A. E. Budd, E. Albertson and J. Burtenshaw It was decided that the funds from the monthly street day on August 1 should be devoted to the overseas soldiers’ parcels fund. It was hcped that the Bluff public would respond to this appeal as it had responded to other similar appeals in the past. It is six months since an appeal for the parcel fund was made. It was also decided to have a “soldiers’ relations” afternoon on August 25, when they would be invited to a social afternoon. These functions have been held in other centres and it was felt that there should be gatherings like this in Bluff also. The secretary (Miss C. M. Sinclair) reported that the Lady Galway Guild was in need of coverings for the quilts it had made and would be glad of donations. The guild was closing down in three weeks’ time and would be glad if those who had promised garments would send them in.
