SCHOOL CONTESTS
RUGBY AND BASKETBALL AT WINTON Teams from the Riverton District High School visited Winton on Friday to play football and basketball matches with the pupils of the secondary department. The visitors, in charge of the rector, Mr D. E. Swinton, Mr Bardsley and Miss O’Dell, were welcomed by Mi' W. J. Bennett. In the Rugby match, controlled by Mr J. Robertson, Riverton made the pace at the outset, the half-time score being 6-0 in its favour. In the second half, however, the home team forwards kept up a steady pressure, and with good support from the backs Winton won by 14 to 6. For Winton tries were obtained by Peek (2), Hamilton and Kilkerr, Hamilton converting one, while Cloughley and Frew scored for the visitors. In the basketball match Winton won both A and B games. When the boys took the field for a basketball contest, the outstanding feature was the amusement derived by the girls as they watched the efforts of the players to develop some skill at goal throwing. The Riverton party was entertained at lunch, and before leaving Mr Swinton thanked the Winton staff and pupils for their hospitality, Mr A. V. Scanlon replying for Winton.
