RETURN MATCH WITH OTAGO ARRANGEMENTS DISCUSSED Arrangements for the return match between Southland and Otago at Dunedin on August 23 were discussed at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Southland Rugby Union last night. It was decided that the team should return home on the Saturday evening. No decision was reached on the number of players to be sent. Mr W. Baird was appointed manager ot the team. . . The chairman (Mr W. A. H. Oliver) said he wished to thank all the members of the executive for the way they had worked to make the Otago-South-land match on Saturday a success. The weather had, unfortunately, been unfavourable, but all the arrangements had gone smoothly. A special vote of thanks was passed to the secretary (Mr A. J. Hamilton) for his services. The Eastern Southland Sub-Union forwarded a list of members of the Mataura Club who are serving with the forces. The letter added that the other clubs in the sub-union would complete their lists as soon as possible. Writing about the playing of three Makarewa players in the Waikiwi third grade team in its match against Invercargill on July 19, the secretary of the Waikiwi Club stated that he had been informed that pending the transfer of the players they were entitled to play for Waikiwi provided their club was extinct, their obligations clear - and the Invercargill captain agreed. The club had no intention of flouting the ruling of the union, but the players in question were on the ground, the Waikiwi team was short, the players had no existing team, and the position was fully and frankly explained to Invercargill, which agreed that the players should be included in the Waikiwi team. It was decided to hold over a decision pending a report from the Invercargill club. The following transfers were granted: —G. R. Dillon, D. C. Kidd and G. S. Allen from Makarewa to Waikiwi. A request from the Mossburn Football Club to play a game against the Pirates senior team on Saturday was granted. Pirates has the bye that day and the match will be played at Rugby Park.
