INCREASING USE OF V SYMBOL

IN SOLDIERS’ PARCELS—IN NEW SONG Evidence of the increasing use in Southland of the V for Victory symbol is accumulating. A V for Victory song has been composed and will be sung at the patriotic community sing at Winton tonight. The symbol was also put to use in another sphere yesterday. A large consignment of soldiers’ parcels, the goods and money for which have been provided by districts throughout Southland, was sent away to Wellington and these contained V for Victory slips with the words “Southland Ladies Work for Victory” printed on them. The V song which will be sung at the Winton Community sing tonight goes to the tune of “Vive L’Amour.” Patrons are asked to clip the cutting and take it along to the sing. It is as follows: — Come join in together and sing it with me ... V for Victory! Till Hitler is beaten and chased from the sea ... V for Victory! Hunt him with Spitfires and Hurricanes too, Wellington Bombers and Blenheims a few, A million incendiaries to mix with his stew ... V for Victory! Hurrah for the Anzacs away overseas, Where Musso was hoping the Suez to squeeze, Sidi Barrani and Mersa Matruh. Eye-Tyes come touring with tanks that are new. Of prisoners Fascist a thousand or two. For Bismarck and Altmark we've heard the death-knell. Good luck to the Ajax. Achilles as well. O’er Calais fly swiftly the pilots by day. On Kiel and Berlin their bombs they do spray, For those who are distant we earnestly pray ... V for Victory! The V for Victory sign is well displayed in Winton, the Borough Council having erected on the band rotunda two large V signs Bft by 6in, one facing north and one facing south. They will be illuminated by electric lights in red, white and blue. EMBLEM IN PARLIAMENT (Special) WELLINGTON, July 25.
