CANDIDATES FOR WINTER CUP

SUNNY KNIGHT IS HIGHLY RATED Sunny Knight has been allotted 9.0 in the Winter Cup and he appears to have more than his fair share of weight. That he was a brilliant hack there is no doubt, but he has had only one start in open company. Certainly he won that, under 8.12, giving him six successes in a row. The Gainscourt gelding has never started over a mile —the Winter Cup distance—and until his last race had shown a definite tendency to stop when sent over more than five furlongs. Great Easter Winner Kentucky, the near four-year-old son of Vermeer, has faced the starter on 28 occasions this season for six wins. Although he subsequently won a race at Te Rapa his best winning effort was possibly his victory' in the C.J.C. Easter Handicap, when he carried 8.2 and downed a strong field which included Circular Note, Doria, Enrich, Density and other smart gallopers at seven furlongs. Good Miler

Globe Trotter, who will be one of the topweights in the Winter Cup showed excellent form at Riccarton in November, winning the Riccarton and Fendalton Handicaps. In his last three starts he has had two wins and a second, one of his successes being the mile Islington Handicap at Ellerslie when he carried 9st 61b and beat Brahman (8.7) by a neck. Globe Trotter is a four-year-old brown gelding by SafariSight Draft, and a brother to the Derby winner Enrich. Over one mile Globe Trotter represents good class. St Cloud

St. Cloud has not had much fast work in the past few weeks, but she looks well, after regular useful tasks. A race at Washdyke next week, followed by another at the Chiistchurch Hunt meeting, should leave her at her best for the Winter Cup, in which her speed should enable her to secure a good position at the start. Australian Campaign

B. Burgess is reported to have sold .his Masterton property and probably he will carry out his former intention to take Augment and Gladynev to Australia. For many years Burgess has trained from the property formerly occupied by J. T. Jamieson in the days when he trained Mr A. McDonald’s good team of horses.

Lightly Raced Bridegroom has been taken along very patiently this winter, and., following Waikato, he was raced only once at Auckland, running second to Streamline in the G.N. Steeplechase when in receipt of 71b. Two years ago, at Riccarton, Bridegroom ran Slayer to half a neck in the Lincoln Steeplechase, Slayer having previously run third in the National to Padishah and Erination, and won the Beaufort on the middle day. Bridegroom and Slayer have not since met, and they are again on corresponding marks, says The Evening Star.
