WOUNDED MEN RETURN

BACK FROM GREECE AND CRETE TRIBUTES TO MAORI SOLDIERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 10. Several hundred wounded men, who recently arrived, were officially welcomed in Wellington today by Ministers and cheering members of the public. The party included both Maoris and pakehas, many of whom bore evidence of their strenuous and heroic fighting. The main topic of conversation among the men was perhaps the splendid work of the Maori soldiers, who were praised to the skies by their pakeha comrades as the best soldiers in the whole world. The Maoris in turn paid a tribute to the pakehas, declaring that the whole New Zealand Army was splendid in battle and in retreat. . The acting Prime Minister (the Hon. W. Nash), in a message read to the troops by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), said New Zealand was proud of her troops. The work they had wrought was beyond praise. Now that you are back,” said Mr Nash, . our simple and straightforward outy is to see that our feeling of pride m you is translated into practical action. “We shall do everything in our power to restore your health and enable you to return to civil life to carry on the work of making New Zealand in reality a land for heroes to live in. It is our earnest wish that you will aJ be soon restored to health and strength to join the army of New Zealand citizens m their march towards better things. Yours was a great task successfully performed. Ours will be carried out with the same devotion and determination in the spirit of brotherhood you have so nobly exemplified. admiration won Mr Jones spoke in a similar strain. He said that where the New Zealanders had met the enemy they had done then part in a way that had earned the admiration of the world. The Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), extended a welcome on behalf oi the city and the Hon. W. Perry Dominion president of the R.S.A., on behalf of all returned soldiers. “Some of you may not find it easy to return, he said DU* Government and the R.S.A. will help you” He hoped the returning men would join the R.S.A. and so help themselves and their comrades There was work to be done m New Zealand for the boys overseas and they, could go on helping to win the war by joining in that work. , , The party included soldiers wounded in the campaigns in Greece and . Crete. Still cheerful and most optimistic, all, whether walking or cot cases, had stories to tell that proved the 2nd N Z E.F. had been welded into a strong brotherhood that would go. through future actions with every individual and unit having complete faith m those with them. The men al. say the i Germans were good soldiers behind their machine-guns, but did not like the hand-to-hand fighting. The parachute troops were magnificently trained and marvellously equipped and the organization of their attacks was worked out to the last detail. One man, referring to the Red Cross, said the Germans had always respected it and would not fire on troops on the ground if they were without arms or steel helmets. VISITING HOURS The Minister of Health (the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer) states that regular visiting hours have been arranged for the clearing station at Aotea Quay, but as there will always be a great amount of work to do in a very short space of time, these visits will be limited to next of kin. Friends and more distant relations should refrain from calling at the hospital and wait until the soldier is transferred to his own hospital. Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. daily. . One of the largest switchboards available has been installed at the hospital, but it allows only three outward lines, one of which is reserved for toll calls. It will be appreciated, therefore, if telephone calls are made only by relations who wish to speak personally to the men. The following soldiers are included in the party to which an official welcome was extended today.
