Double Market

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, May 28. At the double market at Burnside today 400 head of fat cattle were penned. The market opened at 10/— above last week’s rates for all grades and improved as the sale progressed, showing an average rise of 25/- a head for bullocks. Cows and heifers sold at an advance of up to 15/-. Extra prime heavy bullocks realized to £2O 2/6, prime bullocks from £l4/17/6 to £l6/12/6, medium from £ll/7/6 to £l2/17/6, extra prime cows and heifers to £l3/17/6, prime cows and heifers £9/2/6 to £lO/17/6, medium from £7 2/6 to £B/5/-, light from £5/17/6. A yarding of 200 store cattle was larger than at the previous sales and included several pens of good station cattle. The best three and four-year-old bullocks made £l2/5/-, two and a half-year-old and three-year-old £8 to £9/10/-.

There was a larger yarding of vealers than usual and the sale showed a decline on late rates except for choice sorts, which sold up to £7. An entry of 35 dairy cows met a keen sale for any good sorts close to profit. These realized up to £l2/15/-. A large yarding of approximately 4152 fat sheep was penned. The quality was very good and the market was generally firmer by 1/6 a head for all classes of sheep. Extra prime heavy wethers realized to 32/6, prime from 27/- to 29/-, medium from 22/- to 24/-, light from 16/-, prime young ewes made to 20/9, prime ewes 15/- to 17/6, medium from 13/- to 14/6, light from 10/-- , . The penning of fat lambs numbered 1605 and consisted of a large proportion of medium quality lambs. Freezing buyers operated keenly at the increased schedule rates. Extra prime butchers’ lambs made to 35/9, prime from 26/- to 29/-, medium 22/6 to 24/6, light from 19/-. A large yarding of fat pigs came forward. The best baconers made to £5/1/-. The sale for medium and porker pigs was firm on last weeks rates. A large yarding of store pigs met with a dull sale. ADDINGTON MARKET (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. Small entries were the rule in most sections at the Addington stock sale today, and in some there was an improvement in values. There was a small entry of store sheep, mostly station and forward wether lambs. These improved by 1/- a head. Ewe lambs made to 19/-: Two-tooth ewes were 1/- to 1/6 better.

In the fat lamb section 1150 were penned and a keen sale resulted, the export schedule having improved. Top quality made from 29/— to 34/-. There was a small penning of about 3000 fat sheep and an all-round advance of 1/- a head. Lines of quality southern ewes sold freely. The best wethers made from £l/5/- to £l/11/-, tops to £l/14/-, others £l/2/- to £1 6/-, best ewes 18/- to 21/-, medium to 17/-, light to 15/-. Among the 495 fat cattle penned were southern lines. The market opened firmly, but receded and finished up weakly. Good steers sold from £l4 to £l6, tops to £lB, medium £ll/10/- to £l3/10/-, light down to £B. Few good heifers or cows were forward, the best making £l2 and £ll respectively. The best beef made from £l/15/- to £1 17/- per 1001 b ,with tops a shade more, medium to good £l/12/- to £l/14/6 and inferior down to £l/5/-. There was a heavy porker entry and an easing of 3/- to 4/- a head. There was a similar easing for bacon pigs. Porkers made from £2/8/6 to £2/14/6, an average per lb of 6Jd to 7d.
