SCAPA FLOW HAS BEEN UNLUCKY

CONSISTENT RECORD THIS SEASON Scapa Flow has been consistent, though not always favoured with the best of luck, and her dead-heat for first place with Catalpa in the Winchester Trot at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was well deserved. She has seldom run a P°® r race and at Ashburton on Saturday she went another fine race to finish second to Loyal Friend. She is owned by Mr D. Rodgers and trained by A. Fairbairn. Scapa Flow is a very aptlynamed five-year-old bay mare by Man o’ War from Past Memories, Before her success at Washdyke Scapa Flow had started 17 times this season for four seconds, four thirds and one fourth. On the first day of the South Canterbury meeting she gave Loyal Friend 36yds in the Winchester Trot and ran him to a length, registering 3min 14 4-ssec for the mile and a half. On the second day she was again on 36yds and had to give Catalpa a start over the same distance. She is a very honest mare, and should hold her own in two-mile events. At Ellerslie A. E. Ellis has decided to take on riding in jumping races this winter, and his first mount will be Tidewaiter in the Great Northern Hurdles on Monday next. He was recently offered the mount on the likely favourite. King Rey, but by the time he decided on resuming another rider had been secured. He will also ride Kentucky and Circular Note on Monday. is intends to be at Awapuni on Saturday, and has been engaged for Noble Fox and Young Charles. M. Caddy will also be at Ellerslie, and will do some riding for H. Dulieu. Riding At Wingatui

Some riding engagements made for Saturday’s programme at Wingatui are:—H. Hibberd, Mungatoon; A. Messervy, Gold Flight, The Joker, Pipette; M. Billington, Waka; A. Stokes, St. Cloud, Good Health; P. Spratt, Moneymore, Islay Downs, Paper Note; C. Wilson, Straightdel, Flame Queen, Johnemby, Tissue; M. Hollands, Lights Out; R. Register, Superex, Tatting; L. J. Ellis, Confidant, Janefield, Prudent Prince, Valcron; A. Leach, Young Squatter, La Boca; and A. Stove, Master Dingle. Five On End

Sunny Knight has now won five times in succession. His Levin double was so easily obtained that he is. being hailed as an open sprint possibility. There is no doubt about his pace and improvement, but he beat a moderate lot last Saturday on each occasion, and Leighon Rei would have given him more trouble in his first race had she been better placed in the early running. Kindergarten Resumes The champion three-year-old Ki n " dergarten has completed his spell and has been taken in hand again by R. S. Bagby with a view to being prepared for a campaign in Australia in the spring. Kindergarten is in great heart after his rest and his meeting with High Caste, Beau Vite and others in weight-for-age races in Australia will be awaited with interest. Heidelberg Heidelberg, who is on the minimum in the Birthday Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, would only need to reproduce his top form to have a second to none chance in this event. Heidelberg’s performances this year have shown him to be a consistent galloper. He has good winning form to his credit and with the exception of Prudent Prince he has beaten the whole of the Birthday Handicap field. At the weights he looks to be a first-class proposition. The distance will not trouble him ’-d he is not likely to be hampered by the going.

INQUIRY INTO OWNERSHIP OF CIRCULAR NOTE

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. The ownership of the horse Circular Note between May 3, 1940, and March 20, 1941, during which period he raced with success in both the North and South Islands, was investigated today by the Canterbury District Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference. Major D. E. Wanklyn presided. After hearing evidence and also hearing Mr A. B. Sievwright (Wellington), who appeared on behalf of Mrs J. A. Thornton, the committee resolved that no evidence was brought before it to show that any person other than the registered owner (Mrs Thornton) had any interest in the ownership of the horse during the period. The committee also dismissed a charge against Mr and Mrs R. C. Thornton of failing to give information. The charge was laid under Rule 338 (1G) of the Rules of Racing.
