GREAT EXPANSION IMMINENT HEAVY BOMBERS WANTED BY ARMY (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 27. President Roosevelt asked Congress for 2790 million dollars for army planes and 529 million dollars for naval planes, reflecting an imminent and tremendous expansion of aircraft production. It is understood the army requested several thousand heavy bombers. Brigadier-General Hershey, DeputyDirector of Selective Service, told the National Nutrition Conference that Americans were in a physical condition of which the nation should be thoroughly ashamed. Four hundred thousand of the 1,000,000 men examined for service were rejected as unfit. Brigadier-General Hershey said America must be strong, but she could not be when half her sons were below standard.

The American Federation of Labour issued a statement on behalf of 5,000,000 members reiterating full support and all aid for Britain, and concluding -with an expression of confidence in President Roosevelt. The Journal of Commerce says the final cut in the automobile pro-

duction in 1942 will probably be 60 per cent., and in 1943 it will be even more severe. He adds that this is only the beginning of the end to “business as usual.”
