TWO CRUISERS; FOUR DESTROYERS
(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 27. Two British cruisers, the Gloucester and the Fiji, and four destroyers including the Juno, the Greyhound and the Kashmir, have been lost in operations around Crete. In addition two battleships and some cruisers have been damaged. Some of these ships are still at sea and the others will soon be in action. It is emphasized that Britain still has a substantial balance of naval power in the Mediterranean.
General Ali Sabis, the Turkish military authority, estimates that three German divisions had been landed in Crete up to Friday night. He calculates that they have lost a fifth of their total. He expresses the opinion that between 25,000 and 28,000 Germans are now fighting in Crete. The situation in Crete is still confused, but reinforcements and supplies have been landed.... It is admitted in London that the position is serious and that the Germans continue to land parachute troops. Serious fighting is going on at Malemi and Canea and the German generals are showing no regard for the lives of their men.
