WORK ON SUNDAY NOT FAVOURED

SELECT COMMITTEE ON EXPENDITURE

“ABSENTEEISM” CAUSED IN AIRCRAFT INDUSTRY

(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 27. Sunday work should be discontinued in the aircraft industry, except for maintenance, repair of plant and other essential purposes. This is recommended in a report of the Select Committee on National Expenditure, stating that high wages and Sunday labour are two of the main causes of “absenteeism” in aircraft factories, which is causing the loss of thousands of man-hours ly“When a man is able to earn double time on Sunday it is not surprising that he absents himself on a week-day because he feels he is not a great loser on the balance,” states the report. “Aircraft firms consider that absentees are their most serious problem. ‘Absenteeism’ in some factories is regularly between 10 and 12 per cent, of the employees.”
