AUSTRALIAN TURF REVIEW

PREMIER AMERICAN COLT By SIR MODRED Entries for the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, and other important spnng races are due on Tuesday, June 3. The Melbourne Cup will be decided on Tuesday, November 4. A second and two successive wins in Sydney of late have attracted attention to the New Zealand-born three-year-old filly Kama. Sired in France by Dark Legend her dam Karlova was imported to the Dominion from England. At Moonee Valley on Saturday the Southland-bred Larry Resta. ran unplaced in the Second Division of the Tulloch Trial Handicap (lm.). The son of Balboa was sent out in the role of first favourite.

It is on the cards that a strong endeavour will be made to have night trotting legalized in Sydney, and an appeal to the new Labour Government may be made in this direction. For many years night trotting has. proved wonderfully successful in Adelaide and Perth, and as a means of raising revenue for the States concerned it has developed into a welcome source of revenue. SUSPENSION OF JOCKEY Tire leading Victorian jockey, H. Badger, has decided not to appeal against the sentence of two months suspension imposed upon him for careless riding in the Sydney Cup, won by Lucrative. Badger - (on Pandect) interfered with Dollar (V. Thompson) and the horse fell, fracturing his skull and suffering fatal injuries. Thompson has recovered from concussion and is again riding winners consistently in Sydney. Entries have closed for the V.R.C. Grand. National meeting. The Grand National Hurdle Race (about three miles) will be worth £2OOO, and the Grand National Steeplechase (about three miles and a furlong) £2500. Even Keel, dam of the prominent performers, True Flight, and Yaralla, both sons of The Buzzard, a horse of Carbine’s line, is a mare of exceptional breeding. She is by Highfield, an English horse by William the Third, son of St. Simon. Her dam, Syceonelle, was by Syce (imp., and by Cyllene) from Ardonelle, a mare tracing back in maternal family to the noted sires The Australian Peer and Goldsbrough. Heavily supported, the four-year-old horse True Flight won the Annandale Handicap (1.1 m. at Moonee Valley last week. A son of The Buzzard, he is a full brother to Australia’s champion two-year-old colt Yaralla. A very consistent performer during the past and closing season, True Flight has earned distinction for his Queensland birthplace and afforded evidence of staying on with age. The youthful Yaralla has not yet confirmed the expectation that he will stay, but his brilliance is undoubted. High Rank, winner of the Toowoomba Cup and valuable Stradbroke Handicap in Queensland during the past few weeks, was originally trained to win races by Gloaming’s jockey, G. Young. Disposed of in Sydney to Mr Ahern, chairman of the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club, the son of Chatham has proved a bargain counter purchase. KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER After his success in the Kentucky Derby Whirlaway, the premier two-year-old colt of the season in America last year, went on to gain further distinction. His second notable three-year-old success was gained in the historic Preakness Stakes (lm. ljfur.) his winning margin being officially set down at five lengths. At one stage of the race Whirlaway was 20 lengths behind the leaders in the race. Promising to stay well, the crack colt is a son of the English Derby winner Blenheim (son of Blandford) and belongs to the first crop of foals sired by that valuable classic winner after he reached the United States. He was purchased from the Aga Khan at £45,000. A number of British studmasters were inclined to disagree with the sale of Blenheim, but the Aga Khan had used the horse for several seasons at his studs and possessed younger sons of Blandford ranking as proved racehorses. He could hardly be criticized for parting with his first representative of a famous sire line. The Auckland-bred Proud Fox made no mistake when he won the Empire Day Handicap (LJm.) at Randwick on Saturday. On a previous appearance there this month he was involved in a dead heat with Chatoona for the City Tattersall’s Gold Cup. An owner of many years standing, who had never previously won a trophy, the nominator of Chatoona refused to toss up for the Gold Cup and as a result the two owners concerned agreed to divert a portion of their stake money to the purchase of a second cup and the racing club subsidized the amount to permit of two golden trophies being provided. In his latest triumph, however, the New Zealand horse won by a length and a-half from Lockray. A son of the English horse Foxbridge (imp.) Proud Fox, who was a consistent racehorse in the Dominion, is from Gazelia, by Gazeley from a mare of Musket sire line through Cuirassier, brother to Trenton.
