DUNEDIN WINTER MEETING

LARGE ENTRIES FROM SOUTHLAND

113 NOMINATIONS FOR THREE DAYS The nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting on May 31, June 2 and June 7 show that the fixture will again be well patronized by Southland owners. The entries from Southland stables for the three days total 113, and with the entries of Southland-owned horses trained outside the province the total reaches 120. These figures provide convincing proof that many of the horses in southern stables are suited to winter racing, and that their opportunities, outside the Otago district, are limited. On the first day of the meeting the entries total 36; on the second day they number 40 and on the third day 37. The winter meeting at Wingatui has always been a happy hunting _ ground for southern owners, and with the calibre of horse which is available this season Southland again should get its share of the spoils. Last year Southland horses won seven events —four on the first day—at the meeting and the year before they won a similar number. As usual the south is well represented in the jumping events. Eight of the 14 nominations for the Otago Steeplechase on the first day are Southland horses, and in the Hack Steeples the first day there are seven Southlanders.
