OFFICIAL COUNT COMPLETED

City Council And Hospital Board

The official recount of the votes recorded in the election of the City Council and of four members to represent Invercargill city and the borough of South Invercargill on the Southland Hospital Board was completed yesterday. There is no change in the positions of the candidates in either poll, but the number of votes cast for each has been altered. For example, the number of votes recorded for Mr A. Wachner has been increased by five to 3523, and the number of votes for Mr A. W. Jones has been reduced by six. Thus Mr Wachner’s lead at the top of the poll has been increased to 716 votes. The lead of Dr G. B. Orbell over Mr J. G. N. O. Hewton, who secured the highest number of votes among the unsuccessful candidates, has been reduced to 14. His lead was 37 according to the figures announced on Saturday night. The poll on Saturday was probably the smallest, proportionately, ever held in the history of Invercargill. Out of the total of 18,355 persons on the roll only 4695, or a little over 25 per cent., voted. It is considered certain that this apathy was due to preoccupation with the more important events arising from the war. At the municipal election three years ago, when the Invercargill roll contained the names of 15,158 persons, about 8000, or a little over 50 per cent, voted.

1110 statutory meeting of the City Council, when the Mayor and councillors will make their declarations, will be held on May 28. The Deputy-Mayor, members of committees, and the representatives of the council on various bodies such as the High Schools Board, the Museum Board, the Fire Board and the Chamber of Commerce will also be appointed at this meeting. Following are the official figures of the voting:—
