MOTTO FOR MUSEUM

CHOICE OFFERED TO BOARD A choice of Latin, Maori and even Gaelic mottoes was placed before the Southland Museum Trust Board at its annual meeting last night for the inscription on the new building and on the board's seal. Members present could not reach a decision and they agreed to refer four to Mr R. H. Parker for suggestions which would best suit designs he may have in mind. The director, Mr J. H. Sorensen, said the museum would have the finest collection of Maori relics of the Murihiku province in the world and this would be its strongest feature. He expressed himself strongly in favour of a Maori name meaning “The house of treasures.” His view was supported, but other members favoured Latin inscriptions. Three Latin mottoes were selected as well as the Maori phrase, their meanings being: “Let us visit this building again and again,” “Knowledge is power,” and “Great is truth and it shall prevail.”
