STREET LIGHTING AGAIN CUT
Effort To Reduce Sky-Glow
A second reduction in street lighting in Invercargill has been necessary to reduce the sky-glow above the city. This has been effected by another 50 per cent, cut, reducing the street illumination to one-quarter of the original strength. The latest reduction took effect last night and persons who went out of doors for pleasure or business found the streets extremely gloomy. About two months ago a 50 per cent, cut in street lighting was made in an attempt to limit the glow above the city, which was reported to be visible from 30 miles out at se?. That reduction was effected by extinguishing each alternate mercury vapour lamp and by reducing the strength of bulbs used in the ordinary type of street lights. On the North and East roads the mercury vapour lamps on one side of each street were disconnected. In the second reduction each alternate lamp in the remaining system has been extinguished. The result has been that outside the immediate city area there are spaces of up to two blocks between lights. The naked bulb lights in the less important streets are now very weak. The effect of the latest reduction has been to change the character of the lighting system in the city from one which gave reasonably good illumination in most parts of the streets to a mere guide from point to point.
