MOTOR-CYCLIST DIES FROM INJURIES

(Special) DUNEDIN, May 18. The death occurred in the Dunedin Hospital yesterday of Bertram Ernest Dawson, 23 Signal Hill road, Dunedin, a married man with two children, who was critically injured in an accident which occurred near Waipahi on Sunday, May 11. Dawson, who was employed at the Mataura freezing works, was returning with another man, Onsley Green, to Mataura on a motor-cycle after spending the week-end at Dunedin. Dawson was the rider of the cycle. His machine came into collision with a motor-car travelling north on the main road. DEATH IN POLLING BOOTH (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, May 17. The sudden death occurred at a polling booth at Greymouth this morning of Henry Caleb Kilgour, aged 69, a single man employed on the Harbour Board dredge. Accompanied by two friends Banks started fishing from the ledge at White’s Bay between Piha and Anawhata about 3 p.m. and an hour later, when he turned his back to the sea for a moment, a wave washed him off. ESCAPE FROM DROWNING (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, May 17. George Spruce, aged 57, a seaman, narrowly escaped drowning shortly after midnight. He apparently fell into the Grey river while attempting to board the vessel Alexander. He was found by the chief officer, Mr Collins, clinging to the wharf pole. One leg was broken and he was suffering from the effects of his immersion. He was sent to hospital and his condition is reported to be satisfactory. RAILWAY EMPLOYEE DIES OF INJURIES NEW PLYMOUTH, May 18. Jammed between the buffers during shunting operations in the New Plymouth railway yards on Friday, S. J. Riches, a Railway Department employee, received injuries from which he died in hospital on Saturday. Riches was 38 and married with two children. He was recently transferred to New Plymouth from Ngaruawahia.
