BLAZE IN RAILWAY WORKSHOPS
NO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE
The Invercargill Fire Brigade received a call at 3.30 o’clock on Saturday morning to the railway workshops at the corner of Tweed and Liddell streets, where a fire had broken out in the locomotive fitting shed. The alarm was given by Mr J. Roberts, an engine driver.
The cause of the fire is not known, but it is thought that it started at a saw-bench. Wall studs caught alight and the fire swept up to the roof. The brigade's prompt arrival saved an awkward situation. The blaze was soon extinguished and no extensive damage was done. The work of the brigade was facilitated by the efforts of some of the railway staff, who used their own fire apparatus before the arrival of the brigade. They checked the blaze to a certain extent near the ground level.
