WOMEN’S DIVISION

WAIMATUKU.— The monthly meeting of the branch was held in the hall recently, Mrs Mathieson presiding over an attendance of 15 members. Members brought articles of clothing to be donated to the Red Cross Society for distribution. It was decided to write, a letter of appreciation to Mr Currie, who made and donated a cupboard. It was decided to write a letter of congratulation to Mrs G. Strang. Members practised bandaging and home nursing hints. The competition, “Something new from something old” (articles to be handed to the Red Cross) Society) resulted: Miss M. Anderson 1, Mrs B. Hayes 2, Mrs Evans 3. The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs G. Galt 1, Miss M. Anderson 2, Mrs Mathieson and Mrs C. Brown (equal) 3.

OREPUKI: The president, Miss G. Webb, presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the branch. A welcome was extended to one new member, Mrs C. H. T. Simpson was elected secretary for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs G. Finn for acting as secretary. Mrs McConnell,, the speaker for the afternoon, gave an interesting talk on her recent tour of the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Competition winers were as follows: Baking, Mrs G. Finn 1 and 2, Mrs T. Brown 3; sewing, Mrs C. H. T. Simpson 1, Mrs G. Finn 2 Miss G. Webb 3; best bloom, Mrs E. Garden 1, Mesdames C. H. T. Simpson and L. Mehrtens (equal) 2.

EDENDALE— The annual meeting of the Edendale branch was held recently. Mrs McLeod presided over a fair attendance of members. The report showed that the branch had had a successful year. Members had interested themselves in patriotic and Red Cross activities and helped by knitting. The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet thanked all those who had helped in various ways during the year and said she had much pleasure in announcing that the vice-president, Mrs D. Waters, had consented to carry on in the office of president for the coming year. The following office-bearers were elected:— President, Mrs D. Waters; vice-presi-dents, Mrs A. Townley and Miss M. Tither; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. S. Lamont; advisory members, Mrs A. Townley and Mrs W. McDonald; bank trustees, Mrs W. Irvine, Mrs G. Dickson; social trustees, Mrs W. McDonald and Mrs J. S. Lamont; committee, Mesdames M. McLeod, A. Macßeth, G. Frame, J. Caldwell and Miss R. Pow; competitions secretary, Mrs A. MacBeth; exchange table, Mrs G. Frame;

delegates to executive meetings, president, secretary and vice-president; auditor, Mr L. Norton. The president and secretary were each presented with a shoulder spray. Most points for the year in the mixed competitions were gained by Mrs J. Morris and most points in the best bloom competition by Mrs J. S. Lamont. In the junior section most points in the mixed competitions were gained by Miss Doreen Pow, who also won the prize for having entered most times during the year. The runner-up for most points was Miss Edna Waters.

TUSSOCK CREEK.— The monthly meeting of the Tussock Creek branch was held at the residence of Mrs J. Macpherson, when Mrs Shaw presided. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs Holland and Mrs McKay in the loss of their nephew on active service. Mrs Macpherson demonstrated the making of various kinds of pastry and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Miss Adamson 1, Mrs Webb 2, Mrs Shaw 3. Hot water bag covers (to be donated to the Red Cross): Mrs C. Campbell 1, Mrs Webb 2, Mrs G. Cloughly 3.

WAIMUMU.— The monthly meeting of the Waimumu Women’s Institute was held in the hall, Mrs Miller presiding. There was a good response to the roll call which was an article for a soldier’s parcel. During the afternoon members packed six parcels for soldiers overseas. Mrs A. Copland gave the first of a series of travel talks. Mrs Miller thanked Mrs Copland. It was decided to begin the fortnightly card evenings this month. Competitions were won as follows: —Best bloom, Mrs J. Copland 1, Mrs Maclean 2; best beetroot, Mrs Miller 1, Mrs Parker and Mrs Telfer equal 2.
