RIVERTON EASTER MEETING

COMPLAINT ABOUT TOTALIZATOR

DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP

There is no doubt about the popularity of the Riverton meeting, and, as this popularity has grown from year to year, the general management of the fixture must find favour with the majority of racegoers, who from centres far afield make it their annual Easter rendezvous. Since this year’s fixture there has been a good deal of criticism of the management of the totalizator, and to a certain extent it has been warranted, comments “St. Clair” in The Evening Star, Dunedin. One of the chief complaints is that, owing to the recording dials being placed at an angle to the front of the receiving windows, it is impossible to sec the investments recorded on each horse on these machines. This complaint is well grounded, but the fault does not lie with the totalizator contractors. When this addition was proposed Mr W. F. James, who planned the building, arranged that the machines would be set at right angles to the building where investments are made, but the members of the committee of the club took it upon themselves to alter the site to the present one without consulting Mr James. The general public would much rather have the dials above the receiving windows than in their present position, but this fault lies with the committee and not with James and Company. Southland Acceptances Today

Acceptances for the Southland, Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday close at 5 p.m. today.

Jenny Guy

Jenny Guy, towards the close of last season and the beginning of this, had come to be regarded as possibly the best trotter in the Dominion. She had proved a brilliant finisher and fine stayer, and was made favourite for the last Dominion Handicap, in which she failed badly. Her form continued to deteriorate, and in her seven starts before Easter she had not been in the money. But at Addington she struck her best form again, and had to come from a long way back to get up and beat Tan John in the last strides of the Autumn Handicap. Jenny Guy is one of the very few trotters by Adioo Guy, 2.03, who sired many high-class pacers, including Grand Mogul, Aide de Camp, Smile Again, Southern Smile and Jesse Owens in New Zealand, and Theo Guy, 2.0, in America. Jenny Guy is out of Jenny's Maid, by Wallace L. from Jenny Bell, the dam of Bell Harold, White Sun, Morning Sun, and so on. Jenny Guy was bred by Mr H. Hunter, Wyndham, and is owned by Mr J. T. Hunter. Twenty-four Winners

Wins on Confidant and Foxcttc at Timaru on Saturday gave W. F. Ellis 24 winning rides for the season. He is now in tenth place, equal with A. Jenkins, in the list of leading jockeys in New Zealand.

Duke Of Gloucester Cup Featured on the winter programme of the South Canterbury Jockey Club this year is the popular social and sporting event, the Duke of Gloucester Cup. This year’s race is for horses that have started three times in steeplechase or hurdle races or are eligible for hack flat races. In addition to the stake of £l5O, a miniature cup valued at £l5 will be presented to the owner, and the gentleman rider of the winner is to receive a miniature of the coveted Duke of Gloucester Cup as a trophy. Several Southland horses arc eiligible for this event. Walter Moore The Invercargill-owned pacer Walter Moore has won £1262/10/- in stakes this season. Hearth And Density In the Doncaster Handicap Hearth appeared to have none the best in giving weight to Density, but in the actual race the latter was beaten shortly after reaching the straight and Hearth finished on to win. In dropping out so far from home Density made a poor show and the pace set by Don’t Forget settled her. Density put up a brilliant gallop at Riccarton prior to the meeting and did not fail on the score of condition.

Meritorious Win By King’s Toast The Timaru Cup was won by King’s Toast in meritorious style. He was a bit slow to get going after playing up at the post and had to give Not Out a few lengths’ start from the home turn, and then outstayed him. Not Out With a 71b allowance in the Timaru Cup, Not Out appeared to have a good chance. He was well handled and looked a winner a furlong from home, but King’s Toast worried him out of it in a good finish. Not Out would be classed as the speediest horse in the race, and a late run would have suited him better than being sent to the front at the home turn. Not Out was giving King's Toast 221 b in the Craven Plate, and in the Timaru Cup the margin was reduced to 91b. Dam Of The Joker Attractive Lady, the dam of The Joker, who won at Riccarton at Easter, was bred by the late R. B. Stiven at Wallacetown, and is by Tractor from Lady Sentinel, by Kilbroney from the imported mare Lady Wayward 11., by Ladas. Lord Nuffield was her first foal, and bred by Mrs M. M. McDonald. The Joker, her third foal, was bred by his owner, Mr J. A. Brown.

Kindergarten Kindergarten’s two wins at Auckland raised his earnings for the season to £7335. He will easily top the list of winning horses for the year. Last season Beau Vite was on top with £5365. Australian-Bred

Iceland Spar is not the first Austra-lian-bred horse to have won the Great .' umn, as Gay Crest (1930) was similarly bred, and two English horses, Grand Knight (1926) and Princess Argosy (1933) also succeeded in the event. A four-year-old chestnut gelding, Iceland Spar, is a son of the Hurry On horse Excitement (sire also of Bimilla, Gilltowm Adios, Climax and others), and his dam is the imported Rock Flint mare Calcite, from the same family as the English Derby winner Trigo, and dam earlier of the staying Metallurgy, winner of the V.R.C. Bagot Handicap, one mile and a-half, and beaten only half a head in the V.R.C. St. Leger. Calcite was raced in New Zealand by Mr H. A. Knight. Amiable

Amiable, who beat Gold Salute in the Cropper Plate at Randwick, is a New Zealand mare formerly owned by Mr

W. R. Kemball. She is holder of the Australian and New Zealand mile record, which she established at Flemington by defeating High Caste and Ajax.
