BOWLS

CHAMPION PAIRS MATCH The entries in the annual champion of champion pairs bowls competition, conducted by the Southland Bowling Centre on Saturday at the Southland Club’s green, were disappointingly few. Only 10 entries were received from 30 clubs in Southland and it is presumed that the petrol restrictions prevented more entries. Although the entries were small the play was of a high standard. The games reached the final stages with Edendale with two lives and Georgetown with one life. The weather was fine and the green was in exceptionally good order. All the championship finals will be played on Saturday, March 8. The results of Saturday’s play were as follows:

First round: Edendale (W. W. Chaplin and W. Irvine) 17 beat Woodlands (D. McQueen and J. F. Bedford) 11; Georgetown (T. B. Hayden and A. McKenzie) 19 beat Invercargill (T. Robertson and H. L. Hay) 14; Invercargill R.S.A. (J. Falconer and W. Stone) 18 beat Mataura (J. Calder and W. P. Thom) 13; Wyndham (L. Harvey and D. N. A. Macpherson) 19 beat Northend (L. Burgess and J.
