WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL The engineer (Mr J. G. C. Baker) reported as follows at the monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council:— “Since the last meeting the weather has continued mild, and road surfaces are in their usual condition. The Poura-

kino bridge will be completed this month, and the approaches next month, leaving only cleaning up and fencing and so on to be done. Concerning the request of the Thornbury Dairy Factory for road widening at the corner opposite the blacksmith’s shop at Thornbury I have laid off a curve at this place, and I think the roadway can be widened without purchasing any land. Cr Horrell has made arrangements for the Public Works Department’s bull-dozers to widen the roadway at five of the worst bends on the Happy Valley road.”

; The report was adopted, and the work , of widening the corner at Thornbury is to be proceeded with. The following councillors were present at the meeting: Messrs B. C. Korrell (chairman), E. K. Sim, A. Roy, D. D. Macdonald, W. J. A. McGregor, A. Gould, H. G. Pinckney, D. Teviotdale and W. B. Hopcroft. The suggestion of the Rangitikei County Council that nominations for local bodies close on April 2 with a view to avoiding expenditure in the printing of the rolls was supported. Mr H. C. Gimblett, clerk of the

Southland County Council, forwarded a copy of the engineer’s report on flood damage to the bridge over the Oreti river on the Burwood-Mount Nicholas road. Mr Thomas was granted permission to plant trees on the roadside at Mossbum, subject to the engineer’s approval. Mr F. W. G. Miller, secretary, Automobile Association (Southland), forwarded a copy of a letter from the Ashburton County Council on the subject of tree planting on roadsides. The committee hoped that the Wallace Coun-

i cil would adopt the same course as that [ followed by Ashburton, as it was felt i that a comprehensive tree planting > programme would do much to enhance the beauty of the province and make it i attractive to residents and visitors ■ alike. It was decided to inform the ■ writer that the council did not approve of the proposal, as the planting of trees on the roads in the county was a prob- • able source of danger. Cr Roy moved the following notice of • motion: “That the resolution passed by 1 the council about the sinking fund be rescinded”
