RIFLE SHOOTING
CITY GUARDS CLUB The Invercargill City' Guards’ Rifle Club fired the final stage of the A and B grade championships at Otatara on Saturday under good conditions. The final stage of the Old Guards Cup was also fired. In the championship shoot, 10 shots at 300 and 500 yards and 15 shots at 600 yards were fired. The shooting was of a high standard and some good range scores were registered. At 300 yards J. B. Doake and W. McChesney were topscorers with 48. At 500 yards J. B. Doake shot spendidly and scored the possible 50, followed by B. Broomfield, J. W. Doake and Mrs Doake with 48. The long test of 15 shots at 600 yards produced some fine shooting. Mrs Doake and J. B. Doake were the first two to go down, and each scored 71, Mrs Doake with 54555,44555,55545 —71, counting out J. B. Doake, 55544,55555,54545 — 71. The next three places were filled by J. W. Doake, J. Buttolph and D. Wishart, with 70 each. The highest aggregate over the three ranges was obtained by J. B. Doake with 169, Mrs Doake 165, and J. W. Doake 165.
The A grade championship was won by J. B. Doake, who shot splendidly over the six ranges, 144-141-169 —454, which is a new club championship record, beating the previous record of 451 held by A. Ford, last year’s champion. The second and third places in the championship were filled by Mrs Doake 447. and J. Buttolph 441. The B grade championship was also a close finish, being in doubt until the last shot was fired at 600 yards. J. Brydon 370 and D. Wishart 367 were the leaders to go down at 600 yards and Wishart with 555445545555445-70 — 437, won the cup by one point from Brydon with 4444544555444554-66—436. The Old Guards’ Cup shoot resulted in a tie, J. B. Doake and L. Woodsford both reaching the limit of 270, including handicaps. Doake with 5,4,5, counted out Woodsford with 5,5,3.
