A.I.F. CASUALTIES IN LIBYA

LATEST LIST BRINGS TOTAL TO 623 (Received February 5, 5.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, February 5. The latest list of battle casualties in the Australian Imperial Forces, released by Army Headquarters, brings the total to 623, of whom 135 were killed, five are missing and 483 wounded. The list includes a number of casualties at Tobruk, and, at least, one from the action at Derna. Army Headquarters stated that the casualties at Bardia (about 500) would be increased by casualties in isolated engagements, mopping up, and subsequent actions in which the Australians were engaged. A message from Cairo states that the Australian Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, visited in hospital some 180 Australian soldiers who had been wounded in the Libyan battles. He expressed the pride which the people of the Commonwealth felt at their achievements in the North African campaign.
