The German Air Force has lost 35 of its famous “Stukas” (Junkers dive-bombers) in five days in attacks on Malta. ’ In addition at least 12 were lost in the recent attack on the British convoy in the Sicilian channel and between 40 and 50 were destroyed on the ground in a Royal Air Force raid on Catania, the Sicilian base of the dive-bombers. Most of the dive-bombers destroyed over Malta were shot down by Royal Air Force fighters. Three British planes were lost, but the pilot of one of them is safe. Ten divebombers were brought down on Saturday and at least 15 on Sunday. There was considerable damage to civilian property. The Germans made five raids on Sunday, beginning in the morning with an onslaught on the harbour. Severe damage was done for the second successive day to a 400-year-old church.
