REFLECTING STUDS ON CROSSINGS

SATISFACTION WITH DEE STREET EXPERIMENT “I would like to comment on the reflecting road studs which the City Council has installed at a pedestrian crossing in Dee street. I think they are absolutely excellent,” said the chairman (Mr M. M. Macdonald) at last night’s meeting of the general committee of the Automobile Association (Southland). Mr Macdonald added that on a recent wet night he was driving along Dee street and for some reason was not thinking of this particular crossing, but the “cat’s eyes” quickly reminded him that it was there. The North Island Motor Union had passed a resolution expressing the opinion that all pedestrian crossings should be fitted with reflecting studs, and this, he thought, was an opinion that could not be ignored. He hoped that the Invercargill City Council would decide _to install reflecting studs at all pedestrian crossings throughout the city. Dr Stanley Brown said he doubted whether the studs as at present, arranged on the crossing were sufficient to indicate to motorists that it was a pedestrian crossing. Mr Macdonald: It is only a short crossing, half-way across the street to the tramway island. If the studs extended right across the street they would make it clear that it was a pedestrian crossing. It was decided to ask the Wellington City Council for information about the use of reflecting studs on pedestrian crossings in that city.
