GOOD FIELDS AT INVERCARGILL

Spring Trotting Meeting GOLD POT FAVOURITE FOR CUP Supporters of the trotting sport in Southland will be provided with an excellent programme at the spring meeting of the Invercargill Trotting Club today. The presence of several visitors from northern centres will add to the interest of the racing, and as many of the acceptors will be racing for the first time this season a fair line on their prospects for future events will be obtained. Gold Pot, Marque and others of the visitors were worked on the Southland racecourse yesterday and judging by their track work they are well forward for racing. Nothing has happened to cause an alteration in the calculations for the Invercargill Trotting Cup and it is probable that Gold Pot will be the best fancied with Toceetie, the Marlborough pacer, and Foremost Junior next in demand. Dewey's Last, Oregon, and Fransol look to be the best of the novices whicli will be paraded in the first race. Fransol has a winning performance to her credit—at Cromwell in March —but she will be asked to give away 36 yards to a smart pacer in Dewey’s Last, who ran second to Indian Wrack at Gore. The finishing run of Dewey’s Last was very impressive. The straightout trotters will make their first appearance in the Monowai ' Handicap. Geelong, who will be bracketed with Gold Logan, was placed four times last season and Shanghai Peggy, Special Bond and Jimmy Drusus also had placed performances last season. They should provide the favour- ' ites, but unknown quantities in Jock McGrath from Dunedin and White 1 Damp may race well. ! SMART IMPROVERS A good field of improvers will line up in the Thomson Handicap. The . Bankstock-Bondsman bracket may be hard to beat. Both horses won races ( last season and they shaped as if they ( would carry on. Others with good eredentials are Erinack, Irish Guy, who' j won the Trial Handicap at the summer < meeting of the Southland Racing Club, J Harbinger, who put up fast time in r winning at Wairio, Night Nurse, Pon- j toon, Sister Polly and April Direct. The last-named put up two good performances at Gore last week and Sister J Polly is highly rated in the north. She won two races and was placed four ( times last season, and although she is 1 in the mile and a-quarter event later ( in the day she may go well in the I Thomson Handicap. The Takitimu Handicap for saddle 1 horses has attracted a good field. Several raced at Gore and beyond those ; performances there is little to make any c an outstanding prospect. Oregon raced c well at Gore and Lisette came from j Oamaru with a good reputation,, but f failed to show good form at Gore, j Lunch Hour showed speed in patches £ and Polling Day and Indian Wrack both have winning form to their credit. In- 2 dian Wrack raced at Gore like a horse in form and he may be hard to beat j. again. q

Turco shaped in his racing at Gore like an early winner and he is almost certain to be one of the favourites for the Crescent Handicap. Winners in Vorena and April Direct are in the field and Real Gold and Rey Chimes showed / sufficient at Gore to suggest that they will not be long off the winning list. Passing By will probably be made favourite for the Members’ Handicap for which a field of smart sprinters has accepted. Aspirant gave promise last season of developing into a smart pacer and Icilma, Marque and Sister Polly are not likely to be passed over. The following horses are likely to be supported in their races: NOVICE HANDICAP: Dewey’s Last, Oregon, Fransol. MONOWAI HANDICAP: Geelong. Gold Logan bracket, Shanghai Peggy, Special Bond. THOMSON HANDICAP: BankstockBondsman bracket, Sister Polly, Harbinger. INVERCARGILL CUP: Gold Pot, Toceetie, Foremost Junior. TAKITIMU HANDICAP: Oregon, Lisette, Lunch Hour. TRAVIS MEMORIAL HANDICAP: Shanghai Peggy, Jock McGrath, Geelong. CRESCENT HANDICAP: Turco, Vorena, Rey Chimcs-Erinack bracket.
