Cousin Betty’s Letter

My dear Cousins, Do you like our Hallowe’en Chronicle, with its pictures, puzzles, and stories? The kind witch was pleased with the stories, and says that Cousin Iris Winsloe must have been for a real ride with a witch, for she seems to know just what work the kind witches do when they ride abroad on their broomsticks. Did you see the Hallowe’en witches riding out in their hundreds to sweep the skies clear of clouds after the storms and gales which threatened to spoil all the parties planned for All Hallow s Eve? They thought the wind and the rain had done quite enough damage, so when their time came to visit Southland they put in some good work chasing the big black cloud masses right oyer the horizon, then came back to enjoj z a game of hide-and-seek with the fluffy white cloud-children we see playing about in the blue sky on jolly spring days. “You have made a mistake, Cousin Betty,” says Percy Pencil, “this is the second day of summer, so how can spring be here at the same time?” “Susan Spring always lingers for a few weeks during November, just to make sure that her work of preparing the province for her cousin Selina Summer has been well and properly done,” was my reply to that. “She has such a busy time during the three months of her stay with us that she is always afraid she may have left a few things unfinished, a few stray odds and ends which need to be tidied up before she can, with a clear conscience, hand over the country to Selina Summer.” Next week our Chronicle will be a special Guy Fawke’s page, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as this Hallowe'en Chronicle. •.
