WAIKIWI BRIDGE WATERWAY

COUNCIL REPLIES TO RIVER BOARD’S COMPLAINT A complaint from the Waikiwi River Board concerning the alleged inadequacy of the waterway of a bridge on the Waikiwi creek and the raising of the Bay road opposite the properties of Messrs T. Bird and J. Price was the subject of a report presented to the Southland County Council at its meeting yesterday by the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward). Mr Milward said he considered that the bridge opening was of full size and that any flooding of the Waikiwi creek was not due to the size of the opening. From Bay road to the mouth, the Waikiwi creek was considerably obstructed by the growth of weed, and a number of young willows had taken root and were gradually working out into the stream. It was the River | Board’s responsibility to attend to this I stream bed and unless some action was I taken the outlook for the property owners on the banks of the stream, for | the first few miles of its length was no # t | bright. A banking project was being fostered by the Invercargill City Council as a protection for the airport, and if this bank was proceeded with, then the council would have to raise the road in conformity with the bank. The council decided to advise the board that it intended to raise the road if the City Council proceeded with the banking project.
