COMBINED SPORTS BALL £25 RAISED FOR FIGHTER PLANE FUND The balance-sheet of the recent sports ball in aid of the Southland Fighter Plane Fund, received at a meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association, showed that the profit amounted to £25/11/6. The secretary was instructed to write and thank Mr A. C. Taylor and his committee for the successful effort. Those present at the meeting were: Messrs P. R. Stewart (chairman), W. D. Shelton, J. Ritchie, F. M. Murray, T. F. Rusbridge, M. Green, W. H. Sadlier, A. L. McDowell, E. J. Columb, A. C. Steel, J. Adams, C. M. Wilson and G. L. Gerken (secretary). . Motions of sympathy were carried with the following: Mr A. N. Matheson, Ohai, in the death of his brother, Mr R. Bromby, Mataura, in the death of his wife, Messrs A. and W. Orr, Balfour, in the death of their mother. One new member was elected to the association. The secretary reported that the financial membership of the association now stood at 431, compared with 347 for the same period last year. The financial memberships of the subassociations were as follows: West Otago 71; Lumsden 46, and Mataura 40. The general secretary (Wellington) wrote about the National Service Organization (Auxiliary Reserve), stating that the service would not include the National Military Reserve Class 11, but would include all those who had been rejected for service in the forces, those who possessed minor physical disabilities and all those from the ages of 16 to 60 who were anxious to do something. In addition every branch of the organization would have the opportunity of playing a part in the organization of this reserve. • Mr Rusbridge reported having attended a meeting of the East Otago sub-association when it had been decided that the sub-association sponsor the formation of a mounted unit in the Kelso district. Mrs A. C. Steel forwarded three cushions for the club rooms. A motion of thanks was carried.

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE EXAMINATION The Invercargill branch of the St. John Ambulance Association recently conducted a class in first-aid at Gore. The following passed the examination: —Misses M. Jones, B. Howe, M. Baird, R. Jaffrey, P. Mitchell, A. Currie, K. Lindley and L. Collins. The following secured the medallion: Misses L. Bell, N. Elliott, F. Spence and J. Graham.
