SOUTHLAND MUSEUM SITE

SETTING ASIDE OF LAND AUTHORIZED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 21. A clause in the Local Legislation Bill introduced in the House of Representatives this afternoon authorizes the Invercargill City Council to set aside certain land in Queen’s Park as a site for a museum and art gallery to be dedicated as a centennial memorial. This land is held in trust as a public park and the council has no power to utilize it for any other purpose. It is estimated that the site will occupy only half an acre and from a practical point of view the utilization of the area would not encroach to any material degree upon the recreational amenities of the park. Accordingly, there is no objection to the councils proposal.
